Role overview
Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Australia and there are vast differences in smoking rates among population groups in our community. The Tobacco Lead will lead the development and implementation of Cancer Council SA’s tobacco control strategy.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement Cancer Council SA’s tobacco strategy based on best practice and current evidence
- Develop and maintain an up-to-date and expert knowledge of tobacco control issues.
- Work to strengthen the evidence-base for tobacco control programs and to support tobacco control advocacy campaigns.
- Collaborate with Advocacy Lead to draft persuasive submissions and position statements for submission to government and for use by other key stakeholders.
- Liaise with key stakeholders, to encourage partnerships and/or support for Cancer Council SA's tobacco control strategies and represent Cancer Council SA on state and national committees as required.
- Provide expert tobacco cessation advice to health professionals, public health and community service organisations, and the community through briefings, public presentations, website information and social marketing strategies.
Skills, knowledge and experience
- Tertiary qualifications in public health, legal or policy disciplines or relevant experience.
- Understanding of tobacco control issues and health promotion principles.
- Effective project management skills.
- Experience in research and/or program development, including specification of objectives, and delivery or implementation strategies including evaluation of processes, impacts and outcomes of public health interventions or policies.
- Critical appraisal skills, including the ability to interpret and translate evidence and data sets into program and policy advice.
- Research skills, including report writing and statistical analysis.
- Ability to communicate tobacco control information to varied audiences, and to deliver effective verbal presentations.
- High level written and oral communication skills.
- A flexible, collaborative and proactive approach.
Special conditions
- The successful applicant must be a non-smoker
- Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory police check and may require a further Department of Human Services clearance
